From the Streets to a Future of Service: Martha Godwin’s story.

At only 12 years old, Martha’s life was filled with challenges and uncertainty. Growing up in Moshi, she faced serious challenges at home, including not having enough food and very little parental supervision. Her mother struggled with alcoholism, and her father had multiple wives, which left Martha without consistent support or protection. During this period, she spent much of her time on the streets, where she was also abused.
In 2013, Amani Centre stepped in and welcomed Martha into its programs. She received safe shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, counseling, and support to return to school. A year later, she was reunited with her extended family. Even after going back home, Amani continued to support her with school fees, food assistance, and regular counseling to help strengthen her family relationships and provide stability.
With this support, Martha stayed committed to her education. In 2018, she joined Kateshi Secondary School, where she completed her secondary education in 2021. She then enrolled at Huruma Institute in 2022 to study Social Work, completing both a Certificate and a Diploma.
Today, Martha continues to pursue her dream. In January 2026, she began studying for a Degree in Social Work at Tengeru Institute of Community Development.
Martha’s journey demonstrates what can happen when children receive consistent care, support, and opportunities. She is now working toward becoming a social worker so that she can help vulnerable children and families in her community.
